This month is an opportunity to learn about the diverse cultures, traditions, and experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.
Welcome to Kindergarten in Limestone. This is an exciting time for both you and your student. Kindergarten is a wonderful experience and your student’s next phase on their journey of learning.

Kindergarten programs in Ontario offer a full day of learning for four- and five-year-olds. Limestone is unique in offering both English and French Immersion programs in Year 1 and Year 2 Kindergarten.

Our Kindergarten program aims to nurture the whole child. In Kindergarten classrooms, a teacher and an early childhood educator work together as a team. This partnership helps to create a nurturing learning environment; giving every student the opportunity to learn in the way that is best suited to their individual strengths and needs.

We recognize this year has been different due to COVID-19, and we have learned a great deal from our experiences these past months. We are proud of the way our students and staff have responded to these challenges, and we continue to work closely with our partners at KFL&A Public Health to ensure health and safety protocols are in place and appropriate. The health and safety of students and staff is our priority.

Dear Families,

Earlier this afternoon, the provincial government announced that schools in the KFL&A region will reopen for in-person learning on Monday, January 25, 2021. With a downward trend in positive COVID-19 cases in our region, the local Medical Officer of Health has endorsed the return of students and staff. This is good news indeed for students and families who chose in-person learning.

The extended state of emergency and stay-at-home order (which does not include schools as of Monday) will continue until February 11, 2021.

The LDSB Virtual School will continue as usual.

Before students return to school, families need to ensure they are screening students daily for symptoms. If students experience any signs or symptoms this week, they should be tested for COVID-19 at an assessment centre 24 to 48 hours before returning to school. Also, if students and families have travelled out of the KFL&A region, you must monitor for symptoms and immediately get tested if symptoms develop.

When we return to school, existing COVID-19 protocols will continue. These include daily screening, face coverings, physical distancing where possible, and the cleaning of high-touch surfaces. A provincial directive for mandatory masking for students in Grades 1 to 3 is new, however, this is not a change for Limestone as mandatory masking for Kindergarten to Grade 3 (where possible) was introduced last fall. Masking outdoors, when physical distancing is not possible, is also now required across the province. This will be strongly reinforced. We have already been reinforcing these masking measures in Limestone for some time now so these routines will not be new for students. Students will also be provided with a refresher on COVID-19 school protocols upon their return. Secondary students will be encouraged to avoid congregating during break/lunch times.

We know the past few weeks of remote learning have been a challenge for many, and we thank you for your patience and understanding. Our goal is to ensure families may choose whatever learning method works best for their student(s) and their personal circumstances. Should secondary students wish to change from the LDSB Virtual School back to in-person learning, or vice versa, please contact your home school. A new date for elementary students who wish to enroll in the LDSB Virtual School, or return to in-class learning, will be released soon. We will do our best to accommodate families as much as possible if space is available.

A reminder that families can apply for one-time funding of $200 or $250 (for students with special needs) to help offset costs during the 2020-2021 school year. The deadline to apply is February 8, 2021. Learn more on the government’s Support for Learners webpage.

We look forward to welcoming students back to school next week. To ensure we can keep students in school, I urge you to be vigilant. While our numbers locally are trending downward, everyone must continue to do their part by completing the daily self-screening of COVID-19 symptoms, following public health guidelines like staying in our region, and staying home when sick. We know from the experience of the past few months with COVID-19 that the health of our larger community determines the health and status of our schools. We need to continue to work together to keep our schools open for the important roles they provide in supporting students and families.

Please stay safe and continue to follow all public health protocols as directed.
What state of emergency means for Limestone

As you may have heard already, the provincial government announced a renewed state of emergency to help limit the spread of COVID-19. These new measures include a stay-at-home order that will remain in effect until February 10, 2021. This will affect operation of our schools.

For now, schools in our KFL&A region, are scheduled to return to in-person learning on January 25, 2021. We will not, however, know this for sure until January 20, 2021 when the province plans to review regional health data. This is different from other parts of the province such as the Greater Toronto Area and western Ontario that will see schools remain closed until February 10, 2021.

Again, there are no changes for LDSB Virtual School students.

Regardless of the date for a return to in-person learning in Limestone, students with significant special education needs and the educators who support them may continue to attend in-person while following all existing COVID-19 protocols.

Three other changes affecting schools were announced yesterday. One, the mandatory masking for students in Grades 1 to 3, will not be a change for Limestone as mandatory masking for Kindergarten to Grade 3 (where possible) was introduced last fall. The second is masking outdoors when physical distancing is not possible. Again, we have already been doing this in Limestone for some time now. Finally, the government has indicated there will be enhanced school screening and targeted testing at schools. We do not have any further information on this but will share details once we have them.

We will share more details on the confirmed return to school date when it becomes available.

Please stay safe and stay home.

Dear Families,

This afternoon, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and other health experts, the Government of Ontario announced that elementary students will not return to in-person learning next week as planned.

Given the increasing rise of COVID-19 cases across the province, government and health officials believe the safest course of action is to keep students and school staff at home wherever possible for the duration of the provincial lock down. This means elementary students (Kindergarten to Grade 8) will not return to in-person classes until January 25, 2021 – the same current schedule for secondary students (Grades 9 to 12).

There is no change to existing students currently enrolled in the LDSB Virtual School (elementary or secondary).

Child-care centres in schools will remain open, however, before and after school programs in schools will be closed until January 25, 2021 while elementary students learn remotely.

We recognize this extension may pose an additional challenge for elementary families, and those staff with elementary-aged students. As stated before, we will work diligently to support all students focusing on their well-being and learning expectations.

During this first week of remote learning for everyone, I have been impressed by the way students, families and our dedicated educators and support staff have worked to support each other, and adapted to the change in format. Thank you for your patience and kindness during this transition.

By now, all students who require a device should have received one from their home school. If you are still in need of a device, please contact your school for assistance.

As we shared earlier, there are plans in place to support students with special education needs through the implementation of Individualized Education Plans, or IEPs. Supports that were available to students during in-person learning will continue to be available to students learning remotely as appropriate. The board is using a phased approach to support students who require more intensive support. If you have any questions, please contact your school or classroom teacher directly.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we continue to navigate this unique school year.
